Film Festival Favorite

This Saturday judges will select the winners of the ninth-annual Slick Rock Student Film Festival, a competition for South San Joaquin Valley 6-12^th grade students. According to a Visalia Times-Delta article “Colonel Allensworth State Park,” a documentary filmed at the 2011 Rededication is one of Choices editor, James Ward’s favorite entries.    The documentary by, Violet Heintz Education Academy students, Henry Castenada-Martinez and Troy Blueford won the Senior Division of the “Picturethe Valley Film Festival” last November.

The Visalia Fox Theater will host the free screening of the top 100 entries from 9am to 4pm this Saturday. At 7pm the winning films will be announced during an Academy Awards style ceremony.

35th Annual Rededication

Come join the Friends of Allensworth and the California Dept. of Parks & Recreation for the 35th Annual Rededication at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park on Saturday, October 8, 2011.

It is a time for the Friends of Allensworth, park staff, town descendents, and park supports to come together. It is a time to encourage each other to stay the course, to keep Colonel Allensworth’s dream alive. It is a time to pledge our support to protecting the future of Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park.

Entertainment will include gospel and jazz music, spoken word, square dancers, a praise team, and a puppet show. The guest speaker will be author, lecturer, and Allensworth descendent Rose Calbert-West. And as always there will be arts & crafts and food vendors. Space is still available at the campground.

2010 Rededication Celebration

We invite you, your family, and friends to join us as we travel back in time to a period when the Allensworth community was busting with vitality. When the glee club traveled in a Model A Ford to surrounding towns – from Bakersfield to Fresno and back over in the hills to places like Lindsay and Porterville. And the women gathered at each other’s homes to make quilts from the scraps of wore out shirts and dresses.

On Saturday, October 9th Friends of Allensworth members and visitors from all over California will descend on Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park for the 2010 Rededication celebration.

The program will feature live entertainment on the main stage – a puppet show featuring Colonel Allensworth, Spoken Word Artist, Gospel Music, Jazz, Square Dancers, Praise Team, and guest speaker George Palmer. You will be able to purchase food from the vendors or bring your own. Vendors will also be selling art, cards and other African American goods. While touring the historic homes and businesses you will have an opportunity to hear Allensworth decedents share stories that were passed down from their parents and grandparents. Or you can take a ride around the park on one of bikes from the park’s new fleet of rentals bikes.

Colonel Allensworth 5K Run Walk

A 5K Walk/Run will also take place October 10 at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park. The certifed walk/run course begins and ends at the park in time to allow participants to take part in the annual Rededication Day activities.


If you can not be at the State Park for the Run Walk you can still support the Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park by registing as a Virtual Runner Walker, donations of $20 or more will receive a T-shirt by mail.

Help Needed for Field Trip to October 10th Rededication

The Los Banos Buffalo Soldiers are asking for the public’s help to cover the cost of a student field trip to Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park for the October 10th re-dedication ceremony. The Buffalo Soldiers are working with the Los Banos Unified School District to take 60 students to the re-dedication ceremony. If they cannot raise the $2,000 that is needed to cover the cost of the trip by October 4th they will have to cancel the trip.

3rd Annual Colonel Allensworth Century and Fun Ride

The Crankin Time Cycling club is looking for volunteers to help provide water and snacks to cyclists during their 3rd annual Colonel Allensworth Century and Fun ride, on Saturday, October 10, 2009. Volunteers are needed at the starting line, at the four rest stops, and to patrol the bike routes.
