Colonel Allensworth 5K Run Walk for Health

It’s time to gather a group of your family and friends and start training for the 6^th Annual Colonel Allensworth 5K Run Walk for Health. The 5K run walk starts at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2013, at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park. 

Proceeds from past 5K run walks have provided vital support to the programs at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, to include a cell phone tour of the park, a custom Colonel Allensworth puppet, and a host of other items that you can see on the Colonel Allensworth 5K Run Walk for Heath website.

For those who want to run their first 5K check out the free training plans at Runners World, the Mayo Clinic, or JeffGalloway’s site. Jeff Galloway was a member of the 1972 Olympic team and has won the Peachtree Road Race, Honolulu Marathon, and Atlanta Marathon. You can download Galloway’s free workout music mixes at the Motion Traxx website.  The workouts start with run-walk intervals and build up to full 5K workouts.

Did you know cowboys lived in Allensworth?

Now you can use your phone to learn about the families that started Allensworth; learn about their life before Allensworth, in Allensworth, and after Allensworth. Simply call 661-206-3238 and enter the number for the family home or business you want to learn about.  (See table) If you are in the park you can scan the QR code on the sign in front of each of the homes and businesses. The cell phone tour is free, normal usage rates apply.

 

Special thanks go out to the Allensworth AmeriCorps team and Dorothy Benjamin. Installing the signs at each of the tour stops is one of the many projects that the AmeriCorps team completed during their six week stay at the park. 

The cell phone tour was made possible from the funds raised by the Colonel Allensworth 5K Run Walk For Health, which is organized and operated by Dorothy Benjamin. This year’s 5k Run Walk is Saturday, October 13^th at 9:00 am.

Rev. Maurice J. Cotton Sr. Honored

For over 40 years the late Rev. Maurice J. Cotton Sr. faithfully administered to the needs of the Highlight Church of God in Christ congregation and the Lathrop community. Rev Cotton and his congregation have protected battered women and children, helped addicts overcome their addictions, as well as fed, clothed, and housed the homeless. At a ceremony on Saturday, September 3, 2011, the city of Lathrop, California expressed their gratitude for the former Allensworth resident by renaming the street in front of the Highlight Church of God in Christ church after him.

Born in Como, Texas his parents moved to Allensworth while he was serving in World War II. After the war young Maurice Cotton joined his parents in Allensworth where he met his wife Minnie Lee Cotton. In an interview with Record columnist Michael Fitzgerald she recounted how they met, “I met him in the cotton filed, I would have one row [done] and he would have two and double back and be on the third. He was a worker.”

Rev. Cotton was a worker his whole life, he was owner and operator of Cotton Trucking which his children operate today. He also found time to turn a family recipe into a mobile food stand business that traveled to the state and county fairs.

Rev Cotton’s daughter Dorothy Benjamin is the organizer of the Colonel Allensworth Annual 5K Run/Walk for Health, which raises awareness about health issues facing California. Colonel Allensworth Third Annual 5K Run Walk For Health

When: Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 9:00 A.M.

Course: Our certified 5K Run Walk course will begin and end at Colonel Allensworth SHP.

Features: T-shirt, Refreshments, Random Drawing, Timing, aid stations stocked with water, healthy eats and volunteers.

Awards Ceremony: The fastest three male and female finishers for the 5K Run Walk in each age division: 12 under, 13-15, 16-19, 20-29, 30-39,40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-over will receive a trophy.

Entry Fee:

Before September 30, 2010: $20 for adults, $15 seniors; $7 for youth 12 years and younger.

After October 7, 2010: $22 for adults, $16 seniors; $8 for youths 12 years and younger.

Virtual Runner /Walker: Donations of $20 or more will receive a T-shirt by mail.

The certifed walk/run course begins and ends at the park in time to allow participants to take part in the annual Rededication Day activities.

If you can not be at the State Park for the Run Walk you can still support the Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park by registing as a Virtual Runner Walker, donations of $20 or more will receive a T-shirt by mail.
