The National Parks: America's Best Idea

The PBS film The National Parks: America's Best Idea premieres on Sunday, September 27th. One of the featured interviews is with Shelton Johnson, the only African American Park Ranger at Yosemite National Park. Whose of you who were at the Allensworth Centennial Celebration last year saw him perform his Buffalo Soldier Living History Interpretation.

A preview of “The National Parks” film is located on the PBS web site. You can also see Shelton Johnson in the PBS Untold Stories Project video “Yosemite’s Buffalo Soldiers”.

I just read in an article by Carl Pope, Executive Director of the Sierra Club, on the Huffington Post web site that said he was sitting next to Ranger Shelton Johnson during a special one-hour excerpt from the “The National Parks” film in the White House screening room with President Obama, Interior Secretary Salazar, three Park Service Directors, and a select group of members of Congress.

Pope’s article also states that Shelton Johnson’s Novel Gloryland was published this month; you can read an excerpt from the book on the Sierra Club web site.
