Hidden Stories Series Reception

California State Parks Foundation (CSPF) invites you to an evening reception and history presentation on September 23 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park . This event will focus on the life and contributions of Allen Light and Richard Freeman, early African-American settlers in Old Town who co-owned the San Diego House, a one-story saloon and provisions store in what become the birthplace of California – San Diego.

The evening will include light hors d’oeuvres, wine and beer at the newly-restored Cosmopolitan Hotel in Old Town , followed by a presentation by Historian and Senior Park Aide Guire John Cleary. A tour of the San Diego House will be available for interested parties after the presentation.

This reception is part of CSPF’s Hidden Stories Series, a program dedicated to exploring and uncovering the hidden stories of various groups in the foundation of California and the California State Parks . The program debuted in May of 2009 with the inaugural conference 100 Years Since Allensworth: Is California Living up to the Legacy?, which examined the hidden stories of African-Americans from the 1840’s Gold Rush, to the 1950’s segregated beaches of Los Angeles, and to the eventual establishment of San Diego.

For more information and to RSVP online by September 15, please visit www.calparks.org/oldtownrsvp. Space is limited.
