Juneteenth Celebration

Join the Friends of Allensworth at Colonel Allensworth State Historic park on June 25th 2005 as we celebrate Juneteenth. There will be live entertainment, speakers, and free tours of the historic buildings. There will also be an open air arts and crafts market along with a variety of ethnic food for your enjoyment.

Juneteenth is a remembrance of the ending of slavery in the United States. It dates back to June 19, 1865, two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. It was on this day that the Union soldiers arrived at Galveston, Texas with the news that the war had ended and that the slaves had been freed.
